• LCA in Nanjing University, Sun Yet-san University and HongKong City University

To improve the capacity of LCA in China we initiated the free LCA training course in China named PLMCBI. As a part of our China National Lifecycle Initiative (CNLCI) , PLMCBI has seen over 100 students joining our LCA course, and 100 is not the final number yet for 2012, as we have been invited by another university in Shanghai to give LCA lectures for a class sized around 80 students in April 2012.

  • CNLCI-PLMCBI-Beijing

As a key components of our China Lifecycle Initiative (CNLCI), we have officially kicked off our Product Lifecycle Managemenet Capability Building Initiative in Beijing, as our first stop in China. We have been given great support by Tsinghua University's Chemical Engineering Dept as our organizational partner for this event, without them it couldn't have been such a success.

During the two days PLMCBI training, we focused on LCA as a tool and method to address product sustainability issue, with the support from SimaPro, a widely used LCA software. At the meanwhile, we also introduced the CLCI initiative, which is targeting to become the central of life cycle capability building and sharing platform for product sustainability related life cycle applicaitons in China, and also introduced a new water footprint method developed by Ecovane to address the water scarcity issue in China. The last but not the least, we discussed questions and problems regarding LCA and general issue in China such as supply chain sustainability and so on.

  • From landfill to recycling

How did one company take a competitor’s green advantage and turn it into a superlative solution?

In hospitals syringes and other biohazardous waste are disposed of using Sharps containers. Current practice was disposing of the one-time use Sharps containers and their contents by way of sanitization followed by landfill or by incineration. When competitors began talking about how much better a reusable sharps container was from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) perspective, Becton Dickinson (BD), a leading global medical technology company, used their knowledge of LCA to create a service that they thought was even better.

The competitive solution was to sanitize and reuse the containers while the waste followed the conventional path to disposal. In BD's ecoFinity Life Cycle solution, both the waste and the containers will go through a recycling process which will recycle up to 70% of the plastic and metal.
